Daru KIM

Daru Jung Hyang Kim (often shown simply as Daru Kim) is a South Korean-born abstract artist who lives and works in New York City. She earned her Bachelor’s degree from Seoul National University in 1977, then moved to New York to study at the Pratt Institute, where she received her Master’s degree in 1980.

Kim’s work explores the intersection of nature, time, perception, and culture, often using layered circles and forms that suggest cycles of growth, regeneration, and change. Her artistic language emerges from merging East and West sensibilities, along with a deep engagement with the hidden, ephemeral aspects of the natural world.

Her paintings and installations—characterized by accumulated thin layers of imagery and subtle shifts of color—reflect sensations such as shifting light, atmospheric mood, and organic processes.

Kim has exhibited widely across the United States and Korea, including venues like the Bronx Museum of the Arts, Hallwalls Contemporary Arts, the Phillips Museum of Art, and the BenShahn Galleries. Her work has appeared in numerous publications and she has received several public art commissions, including a permanent installation for the MTA Arts & Design program and major works for the NYU Langone Medical Center.
